Grandchild care plays an increasingly important role in raising children. However, the health effect of grandchild care on grandparents remains understudied. This paper estimates the causal impact of grandchild care on grandparents’ health in China. Identification is achieved by using the gender of grandparents’ first child as the instrument for providing grandchild care. The main two-stage least squares estimates demonstrate that providing grandchild care leads to better self-reported health status, better psychological well-being, improved lung function, and enhanced episodic memory capacity of grandparents. Further heterogeneity analyses suggest that the positive health effect differs according to regional characteristics and grandparents’ demographic features. The paper also documents that grandchild care might shape grandparents’ health by reducing labor supply, restraining access to resources, getting rid of poor health behavior, and increasing children’s emotional support.
