内容摘要
We develop a novel measure of firms’ decarbonization efforts based on job postings that require climate-related skills. We find that firms with higher historical carbon emissions are more likely to target climate talent in hiring, especially climate laggards and firms with publicly declared climate strategies. This hiring response strengthens during periods of heightened media attention to climate issues but weakens when climate policy uncertainty increases. The relationship becomes more pronounced following the Paris Agreement, which introduces an exogenous increase in carbon risk. We further show that firms allocate climate hiring toward locations where they operate higher-emissions plants and where the local supply of climate-related talent is abundant. Moreover, climate hiring significantly reduces firms’ emissions intensity, particularly in labor markets with lower hiring frictions, where access to specialized talent facilitates innovation in climate technologies. Additional analysis shows that firms more active in climate hiring face a lower cost of capital. Overall, the findings underscore human capital as a key lever in corporate climate mitigation strategies and highlight the importance of easing labor market frictions to support decarbonization.
